Applying for (interdisciplinary) research funding: making your application competitive
Session intro:
Research funding is a contest, not a test. It's a competition. But many applicants don't fully understand how funding selection processes really work, and so end up writing in for the wrong audience. The first part of this talk will cover how funding decisions are made and why that matters, how to write at the right level of detail, the significance of significance, and finally, how to talk up your ideas without boasting. The second part will look at interdisciplinary research - why it's hard, why we should do it anyway, how we do more/better, and finally, addressing the particular challenges with writing funding applications for interdisciplinary projects.
